How to finance an auction vehicle

Auction timelines are brutal for financing. Here is how buyers actually fund auction purchases in Kenya.

The timing problem

A normal car loan is approved against a specific car over days or weeks. An auction gives you no such luxury: you must pay a deposit the moment the hammer falls and clear the balance within days. Standard asset finance processes are usually too slow, so auction buyers plan their funding before the auction, not after.

Routes that work

In practice, Kenyan auction buyers fund purchases through a few routes, often in combination:

  • Pre-arranged asset finance — engage a lender before the auction with the unit details so approval is ready when you bid
  • Logbook loan on an existing vehicle — unlock cash from a car you already own, buy at auction, then repay
  • Sacco or bank personal loan — slower to arrange but flexible once disbursed, since you bid as a cash buyer
  • Cash plus a top-up facility — cover the deposit yourself and finance only the balance

What lenders will want

Whichever route you take, lenders will assess you the same way: identity documents and KRA PIN, evidence of income (bank or M-PESA statements, payslips or business records), your CRB status, and details of the security. For pre-arranged asset finance on an auction unit, bring the auction listing and the valuation so the lender can size the loan against forced sale value.

Count the whole cost

Budget beyond the hammer price: auctioneer's fees, transfer costs, insurance, and the repairs you priced during inspection. A financing plan that covers the bid but not the recommissioning of a car that has sat idle for months is not a plan.
