How CRB affects your financing

What credit reference bureaus actually record, what listing does to your options, and how to clean up your file.

What CRB actually is

Kenya's licensed credit reference bureaus — Metropol, TransUnion and Creditinfo — collect repayment histories from banks, microfinance institutions, saccos and digital lenders. Every formal lender you approach will pull your report. It is not a blacklist; it is a memory. It records both your good repayment and your defaults.

What a negative listing does

A default listing does not automatically mean rejection everywhere, but it changes the conversation: some lenders decline outright, others price the risk with higher rates, demand more security, or cap the amount. Small unresolved digital-loan defaults are a common and avoidable reason strong applicants get worse terms than they deserve.

Know your file before lenders do

You are entitled to check your own credit report — each bureau provides access, and one report per year is free. Pull it before any serious application. Look for loans you have cleared that still show as outstanding, listings you never knew about, and identity errors.

Cleaning up

There are no shortcuts and no legitimate 'CRB removal agents' — be wary of anyone selling instant deletion. The genuine route is:

  • Clear the defaulted amount with the lender that listed you
  • Obtain a clearance certificate and ensure the lender updates the bureaus
  • Dispute genuine errors directly with the bureau — they are obligated to investigate
  • Rebuild history with small, promptly repaid facilities

Listed but need financing now?

Options narrow but rarely vanish: secured products like logbook loans weigh the security more heavily than the report, and some microfinance lenders assess current cash flow over past stumbles.
